Swap It: Made In Japan

Rose Reisman’s “Swap It” is a smart guide to giving in to cravings, while choosing more nutritionally savvy options at restaurants, take outs and supermarkets. The Japanese have the lowest rate of obesity in the world.  But select carefully if eating in “Made in Japan”.

The Yakisoba noodles with chicken, beef and teriyaki sauce can give you high blood pressure by consuming that much sodium.  The 2000 mg is your entire day’s worth. You may as well enjoy 22 cups of movie theatre popcorn in terms of sodium!

The calories are also too high for this meal due to the noodles, which are fried and made with eggs, and the hot and spicy sauce, which is three times the calories and five times the fat as the Pan Asian sauce.

Swap it for the lower caloric and lower sodium Pan Asian noodles with chicken and pan Asian sauce.

Yakisoba noodles with chicken and beef and teriyaki sauce

  • 639 calories /  9.2 gm fat / 2.8 gm saturated fat /  2000 mg sodium
  • = 22 cups of movie theatre popcorn in sodium

  • 421 calories / 4.2 gm fat  /  1 gm saturated fat /  1085 mg sodium
