Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a very common ailment for young and old and there are many myths about what foods actually help or hurt the condition:

  • We all think of a bland diet when treating acid reflux. Studies show giving up trigger foods had little long term effect.  The key is lifestyle changes such as weight loss, less stress and sleeping with your head elevated.
  • To drink milk or not?  Initially milk soothes but then there’s a rebound effect and the calcium triggers more acid being produced.
  • Mint is another home remedy but often increases symptoms. Licorice has anise which helps digestion
  • Cut out coffee, juice and alcohol?  There is no scientific evidence that they cause acid reflux but reducing the amount may help.
  • Antacids taken daily can result in long term side effects such as osteoporosis and dependance.
