Best Foods for Snacking

{mp3}680news – snacking – feb 19 2014{/mp3}

Snacking is a Canadian pastime.  We eat close to 600 calories a day from grazing which is about 1/3 our daily calories. Snacking can be the reason you either lose or gain weight. You need snacks that are lower in calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium and sugar and higher in lean protein and fibre, which are not always easy to find.

  • Go for plain Greek yogurt with loads of protein and add your own fruit instead of the commercial fruit flavored which has little protein, excess sugar or artificial sweeteners.
  • Lose the dried fruit which has concentrated sugar and calories and always go for fresh.
  • For example, instead of  rice cakes that are great for crunching on, microwave  low fat popcorn instead which has more fibre and a lower glycemic index.

You’ll win the battle of the snack!
