Best Foods for Winter

{mp3}680news – serotonin – feb 5 2014{/mp3}

During the colder months many of us suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), leaving us in a poor mood and often more vulnerable to viruses.  Certain foods can raise our happy hormone serotonin and build our immune system:

  • Oatmeal – stick to your ribs cereal.  Whole grains keep your serotonin elevated and maintains your blood sugar levels.
  • A sandwich consisting of a protein and whole grain keeps you awake and more energized as the daylight grows shorter.  A chicken or peanut butter sandwich is perfect.
  • Garlic is a virus and cold blasting foods.  The chemical allicin stimulates the production of infection fighting white blood cells.
  • And of course chicken soup – it really helps to clear your sinuses and reduce inflammation in your nose and throat.  The best is to make it from scratch or better yet, call your mother!
