Many people suffer gout, which is an attack of inflammatory arthritis caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood that crystalizes in the joints. Certain foods can increase gout:

  • Limit your beer to no more than 3 drinks per week
  • Limit high protein foods which contain purine,  including liver, sardines, anchovies, sweetbreads, caviar, beef kidneys, lobster, game meats, scallops and meat extracts such as Oxo or Bovril
  • Keep your proteins to no more than 6 oz daily
  • Certain vegetables contain purine such as asparagus, avocado, cauliflower and green peas
  • Substitute animal protein with plant based protein which have lower purine levels
  • Avoid high fructose beverages which stimulate the body to produce more uric acid
  • Low fat diary and tart cherries may prevent gout by 50%

Above all, obesity also increases the likelihood of gout, so remember the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise.
