Sushi has the perception of a light and healthy meal. Raw fish, sea weed salad, Miso soup, tofu and rice is traditional Japanese cuisine and definitely nutritious. But contemporary Japanese sushi in North America has little resemblance to the traditional cuisine of Japan.

Keep this in mind next time you’re ordering:

  • 4 shrimp tempura contains close to 300 calories.  Better off ordering 4 gyoza for only 160 calories
  • A spider roll containing soft shell crab, avocado and mayo is over 500 calories.  A spicy tuna roll only has 290 calories
  • A dragon roll has deep fried shrimp, avocado, crab and eel coming in at 650 calories.  The California roll has only 255 calories.
  • Note that Japan has the lowest obesity rate in the developing world – ten times less than North America.
